He sat quietly during the briefing along with the others while their CO outlined the next offensive, his eyes taking in the detailed holographic map displayed on the floor before them. Hours later he trekked along his assigned route, barely feeling the weight of his weapon and accompanying ammo drum thanks to the powered servos of his assault armor. Behind him and keeping pace were three anti-air flak drones, their sensors constantly scanning the atmosphere for disturbances in the air or listening for the all-too-familiar droning of wings from the Vilehive's warrior caste.
He ignored the drones completely, remembering his training and experiences from fighting the insectile invaders Command had codenamed Vilehive. The worker caste always attacked en-masse from the front, overwhelming their enemy through sheer numbers and able to even rip apart tanks. Fortunately they were a hivemind intelligence and the more you killed the less coordinated their attacks became. His job was to focus on the crawlers while his drone support targeted the more vicious flying forces.
"Right on cue," he said to himself, noticing a small herd of fifty-plus crawlers rapidly advancing. Bracing his weapon and activating his helmet's HUD to help point out the closest ones, he pressed the trigger and began earning his combat pay for the day.
