Ra

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Ra is the god of the sun and one of the most important deities at that time, ruling over all parts of the created world: sky, earth, and underworld. Commonly, he was depicted with a hawk's head and a sun disk on top.

Back in my early childhood, I was obsessed with ancient Egypt... pretty much all of the first books I read dealt with deities, pyramids, and pharaos. Although my interests shifted a little over the past decades, I still keep this dearly in my heart. During the making of Black Hole Eye, the idea to paint an eclipsed sun with the guy in charge sparked (some say, it's not perfectly clear which deity was actually responsible for solar eclipses but here's where the artistic mind has to fill some gaps! If you have some reliable info on this, please feel free to educate me, though! ).

Furthermore, this weaves into my whole endeavor to paint arbitrary shapes into nebulae such as in Skull Nebula, Boar Nebula, Wolf Nebula, or A Head Full of Clouds.
