So, I have been seeing a LOT of these "Stop AI Art" images being uploaded en masse on DeviantArt as a response to all the AI art flooding that's recently occurred on the site. This also applies to Twitter, ArtStation, Furaffinity and others. I almost considered doing the same, but since I'm not a big fan of getting angry and yelling things at the internet, I decided to try a different method and just lay out all my thoughts and opinions instead. First, let's get the facts out of the way: AI art generation is a tool that requires pre-existing human art to function. It cannot effectively replace artists because it still needs artists to work, and in a vast amount of cases, the artists do not consent to their work being added to a dataset. Even the best looking AI art is no more than an amalgamation. This is a very confounding situation. If you've been a digital artist for any extended period of time, you're aware of all the weird, uninvited trends that seem to disrupt the act of
